Changes to an application or right
Please notify us of changes
The NIPO name registers are not coordinated with other public registers. We therefore do not receive notification of any changes to names or addresses unless you inform us of them.
An incorrect address may result in the letter being delayed in the post, or not reaching the intended recipient. This may result in you losing your rights due to late receipt of payment or non-payment.
In the event of a dispute over who is the rights holder, it is an advantage if the correct applicant or holder is listed in our register.
You must notify us of any changes before you pay the annual fee or the renewal fee. This is important, so that the renewal document contains the correct information.
Language requirements
You can send a notification of change in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. Correspondence from us will be mainly in Norwegian.
Documentation
We require documentary evidence for certain changes.
Send copies
Please send copies of the documents that you are attaching to the notification, as we destroy all such documents one year after they have been received and scanned into our electronic computer system. We prefer original forms, but we will accept copies of the forms, provided the information is clear.
NB: You must always specify which application number or rights number the change refers to. You must also specify which type of rights the change refers to - patent, trademark or design.
Secure your rights: remember to register licences, mortgages and transfers in the NIPO's registers
Have you taken over ownership of a right, entered into a licence agreement or mortgaged a trademark or patent right? Then you should register this in our registers.

The application stage
The form must be signed by the person who is listed in our register as the applicant, or by the applicant's representative.
After registration
The form must be signed either by the previous holder or by the new holder (from whom or to whom the right has been transferred), or by the representative of one of the parties.
When notification of a transfer or merger is given, the representative is not transferred automatically
If a representative has been appointed in the case, the representative will no longer be contacted when the application or right is transferred to a new applicant or holder.
If the new applicant or holder wishes to use a representative, you must inform us accordingly (see "3. Change of representative" for how to proceed).
2. Changes of name and address

The application stage – applies to trademark and design applications
You may submit a notification of change of representative without attaching a valid power of attorney document, but if the power of attorney document is missing at the time of registration we will delete the representative and forward correspondence in the case directly to the holder.
The application stage (patent), and after registration (for all specialist areas)
You must submit a valid power of attorney at the same time as submitting a notification of change of representative. Use the NIPO form for power of attorney.
Is a representative necessary? The form for power of attorney
It is not necessary to appoint a representative. We will send all correspondence to the applicant or holder if no representative has been appointed in the case. Correspondence from us will be mainly in Norwegian.
If you choose to use a representative, you can use our form for power of attorney both as a power of attorney document and as a form to notify us of a change of representative.
A lawyer does not need to submit a power of attorney document, but if you have given the assignment of acting as representative to a law firm you must submit a power of attorney.
All persons who are specified as applicants or holders of an application or right must sign the power of attorney. We will accept a copy of the power of attorney provided the information in the copy is clearly specified.
For a power of attorney to be valid, the document must state clearly to which application or right the power of attorney applies. Alternatively it must be stated clearly that the power of attorney is a general power of attorney. A general power of attorney applies to all the applicant's or holder's cases in one or more areas. If you refer to a previously submitted power of attorney, you must always attach a copy of this.
If a representative wishes to transfer representation to another representative, and it is evident from the power of attorney that the representative has the right to do so, then the previous representative can sign the form.
Notification with limited scope to act as representative
We register changes in an application or right if we are informed of them by the applicant, holder or appointed representative. It is also possible for persons other than the appointed parties to notify us of changes to our register (notification with limited scope to act as representative). In such cases we require you to attach at least one of the following documents:
- a limited power of attorney
- a form signed by the applicant or the holder, for example form for change of name/address or transfer (change of ownership)
- documentary evidence of the change, for example printouts from trade registers, company registers or the Brønnøysund Register Centre
- a copy of the assignment from the applicant or holder
If the change is a change of name or address, the representative already in our register will remain as a representative after the change of name or address has been carried out.
If, on the other hand, the change applies to a transfer (change of ownership) or merger, you must provide us with information about who is to be listed as the representative of the new applicant or holder – or whether the application or registration is to be continued without a representative. If the new applicant or holder has appointed a representative, you must attach a power of attorney confirming this.
This means that if a notification of change of ownership or merger comes from persons other than an appointed representative, you must attach a power of attorney that is to apply after the change has been implemented. This is in addition to either a limited power of attorney, documentary evidence of the change, a form signed by the applicant or holder, or a copy of the assignment.

The applicant, the holder, the licensor, the licensee, or the representative who represents one of these, can sign and submit a notification of licence. You must attach a power of attorney confirming the representative relationship unless this has been submitted previously. Use the NIPO form above.
If the licence agreement does not apply to the whole application or right, you must inform us in Norwegian what parts the agreement covers.
