Patents and applications older than 18 months are publicly available. Below are some examples of applications and patents. We also show examples from outside Norway.

As applications and patents are constructed in the same way in all countries, the examples can be used as inspiration when you write your application.

Mechanical Engineering/Fixed Constructions

Mechanical Engineering/Fixed Constructions is a large and extensive field of expertise with a long tradition, and comprehensive patent literature. Most everyday inventions are to be found in this category.

Petroleum and ships

For Norway, along with a few other oil-producing countries, oil drilling is an important field of expertise. This includes subsea technology, as well as risers and Christmas trees.

Ships is also an industry that is important for Norway.

ICT and telecommunications

For software and telecom, it is an additional challenge to show that the invention is industrially applicable, see number 4 in this guide. The Patents Act has some exceptions that patent applicants for ICT and telecom must be extra aware of. This applies to the following paragraphs from the Patents Act Section 1:

3. schemes, rules or methods for performing mental acts, playing games or doing business, or programs for computers;
4. presentations of information.

Electricity/Physics/Sensors

In the field of electricity, physics and sensors, we have all types of applications, from those applying for the first time, to professional applicants. This field includes a wide range of applications, from simple optical solutions to heavier sensor technology, to cold fusion.

Chemistry/Pharmaceuticals

We assume that you are a professional in the field of chemistry if you are planning to write the patent application yourself. Even then it is complicated and we recommend that you seek professional help in writing your application.

Chemistry is a major subject area and includes inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, process chemistry and petrochemistry.

Patents for pharmaceuticals that are aimed at a chemical compound as the active substance in a pharmaceutical product are included here.

Some cases require documentation in the form of sequence lists and information about the place of deposit for the biological material.
