How long does it take to register a trademark?

1. Applications: prepaid, filed via NIPO's application guide or Altinn

2. Applications not paid for when filing and/or filed without a pre-approved list of goods and services from our Product Selector

You can expect an answer to your application within 5-6 months. Our goal: 4 months. |

3. International applications filed via the Madrid Protocol (sent in via Altinn, e-mail or on paper)

If NIPO rejects your application, you can request that we reconsider your case. You can now expect to receive a new assessment within 8 months of submitting your arguments to us (a second assessment). Our goal: 6 months |

4. Final decisions
This applies to applications where NIPO upholds the rejection of your application for two or more rounds. You can appeal this decision to the Board of Appeal for Industrial Property Rights (KFIR).

You can expect to receive a final decision within 5-6 months from the date we received your final comments in the case. Our goal: 4 months |

This applies to cases where a third party has submitted a complaint concerning a registration. Read about opposition.

You can expect to receive a final decision in an opposition case within 5 months from the date when both parties presented their comments. Our goal: 4 months |

6. Administrative review
This applies to cases where someone has requested the cancellation of a registered trademark on the basis that it is, for example, not valid, has degenerated or is not in use. Read about administrative review

7. Customer satisfaction
