How to use the application guide
In the application guide, you can start a new application, find application receipts and correspondence in "My messages" and in Altinn. You must log in to access your cases.
Are you well prepared?
You cannot add to or make major changes once you have submitted your application, so it is important that you are well prepared before submitting it. We have made a to-do list of what you should think about before submitting your application.
Application guide or Altinn?
We offer two ways to submit an application for a patent, trademark and design to the Norwegian Industrial Property Office; the application guide and Altinn. Most of the content is similar, but there are a few things that set them apart.
For both options, you can find the application receipt in Altinn.
In the application guide, we have to a greater extent included help during the filling in, and we particularly recommend this to those who have not applied before. Here you have to pay when submitting the trademark and design (for patents you can also choose an invoice). There are certain limitations in relation to Altinn:
- For trademark, you can only choose word mark, figurative mark or combined mark. If you are looking for another brand type, you must choose Altinn.
- For patents, you must choose Altinn if you require the deposit of biological material, sequence lists or wish to continue an international application.
- Design only allows you to apply for up to ten designs in the same application. If you want more, you must choose Altinn.
In Altinn, in addition to the application forms, you will also find other forms (such as forms for correspondence). Those who apply via Altinn receive an invoice as a payment option, but we remind you that payment upon submission will result in a shorter processing time for trademark applications.

Use Google Chrome or the new Edge as a browser. Feel free to start a new private browser window (Ctr Shift N). This should prevent the browser from saving browsing history and temporary data.
Make sure that third-party cookies are not blocked. We need them for integrations with Altinn.
Technical problems are often caused by cookie settings in your browser. We need these when we retrieve your role from Altinn. Below you will find alternative solutions.
The service does not always work with Safari or Internet Explorer, so we recommend using Chrome or Edge.
Chrome
Start a private window/incognito mode (Ctr Shift N). On the new page you get, make sure the switch to block third-party cookies is turned off.
Edge
Start a private window/incognito mode (Ctr Shift N). Remember to turn off blocking (Settings > Cookies and Website Permissions > Cookies and Website Data > Block cookies from third parties).
Safari (not recommended)
Start a private window/incognito mode (Shift Command N). Remember to turn off blocking (Safari > Options > Cookies and website data)
If you do not want to try private window, you can try to delete cookies

Chrome
Start a private window/incognito mode (New page button > Private > done). You must ensure that third-party cookies are not blocked (Settings > Chrome > Allow cross-site tracking).
Safari (not recommended):
Press the button for new page > Private > Done. Remember to turn off blocking (Settings > Safari > Privacy and security > Block all info capsules)
Android
Chrome > Settings > New Incognito Tab. On the page you get to, make sure the switch to block third-party cookies is turned off.
- There is a drop-down list at the top right of the page, where the name of the selected role is written.
- Choose the right role before you start the application.
- The role you choose when you log in determines whether you have access to the receipt. If you submitted the application on behalf of a company, the receipt is in the company's archive in Altinn. The general manager must have given you the role "Patent, trademark design" in Altinn for you to have access to see the receipt.
- Receipts for submitted applications can be found under My messages.
- You can also find the receipts in the archive in Altinn.
- The role you choose when you log in determines whether you have access to the receipt.
We recommend that you who have not applied for a trademark before, read more about the selection and classification of trademarks and services first.
The product selector is a tool that the Norwegian Industrial Property Office has created for you to select products for a trademark application.
It may be a good idea to log in via the ID port before you start filling in the product selector. After you have selected products, click on the "Start application" button

The payment solution is not with the Patent Office, but is provided by NETS via Altinn. It may be that there are problems with one of these suppliers.
