Change of mark
If you want to change a trademark that you have applied to register, or make changes to a trademark that is already registered, you can request a trademark change.
Terms of change
The Norwegian Industrial Property Office may accept mark changes if the changes are “insignificant and do not affect the overall impression” (Trademark Act, sections 13 and 34). This condition implies that there is a narrow scope for making changes to a trademark.
We specifically assess in each individual case whether a brand change meets this condition.
If we reject a request for a mark change, you can still apply to register the mark as a new trademark application.
What does it cost?
If you wish to change the mark of a registered trademark, you must pay a fee of NOK 1 200. This is for processing the claim, and must be paid regardless of whether we accept the change of mark or not.
If you wish to change the mark of a trademark that is under processing, you do not have to pay this fee.
How do you request a trademark change?
Complete the form for other changes and send it as an attachment together with the correspondence form to the Norwegian Industrial Property Office.

A registration of a mark in black and white also provides protection for reproduction of the mark in other colors. The change therefore means that the protection of the mark is limited to reproduction in blue instead of the mark having protection for reproduction in all colors. If the change had been the opposite, from blue to black, the change would not have been accepted as the protection would have been extended to reproductions of the mark in all colors.
